The Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has warned Zlatan Ibrahimovic of the perils of leaving the club. The Sweden striker has been linked with a move to Spain in the summer, with Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly interested in signing him. Ibrahimovic, who has 19 Serie A goals so far this season, recently hinted he could leave Inter.

The 27-year-old centre-forward was a target for criticism from the Nerazzurri fans and Moratti after the Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United, having scored just once in eight appearances in the competition. "Perhaps he wants to go somewhere else to win the Champions League," said Moratti told the club's website. "But it's difficult to know which team can win that trophy. Inter will try again next season. It has happened already that sometimes in life you make changes and then regret them."

Moratti added: "Perhaps he was hurt by my remarks after Manchester. But I was referring to all the players, not just him. Obviously he reacted to that defeat just as I did. He was hugely disappointed. "But I don't want to think of an Inter side without Zlatan because of the effect he has on the fans. I would like to think that Ibrahimovic will continue at Inter." Ibrahimovic is contracted to Inter until 2013. "Zlatan has a good relationship with [Inter coach Jose] Mourinho and with the club," Moratti continued.

"There are no meetings scheduled with him for the end of the season. There is reciprocal trust." twoods@thenational.ae
