The Yankees shortstop broke his left ankle during the playoffs defeat to Detroit, and will face months out of action.
MLB: Jeter sidelined for five months after ankle surgery
New York Yankees player Derek Jeter will be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery to repair a broken ankle.
Jeter moved to his left to grab a ground ball hit by Detroit's Jhonny Peralta and he fell to the ground as he gloved the ball, then grimaced as he flipped it to a teammate.
The Tigers went on to sweep the Yankees in four games -- the first time in 32 years the Yankees had been swept in a post-season series.
In six playoff games, Jeter hit .333 with two runs batted in. He batted .316 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI in the regular season.
The surgery was performed by a foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, North Carolina, and recovery was expected to take from four to five months, the team said.
