Milan eye new defender
AC Milan will target a left-back in January as they look to strengthen their squad and close the gap on Serie A leaders and city rivals Inter Milan. The club's managing director Adriano Galliani has revealed coach Carlo Ancelotti plans to use the versatile Marek Jankulovski increasingly in midfield, creating a vacancy on the left side of defence. "Our goal is to buy a major player, a player at the highest level who plays as a left-back, because we plan a move to midfield for Jankulovski," he said. "But I deny that we will sign a central defender as we have several players there with (Paolo) Maldini, (Kakhaber) Kaladze, (Daniel) Bonera and (Philippe) Senderos." The Rossoneri, currently at a winter training camp in Dubai, have already strengthened their ranks with the signing of David Beckham on a short-term loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, although he will spend only two months in Italy before returning to America. Milan trail Inter by nine points after 17 games, but Galliani insisted that the title race is still on. "Our desire now is to get off to a great start in the second half of the season," he said. "Our goals are to win the Scudetto and the Uefa Cup."
