Macalzone's hopes clipped against Team NZ
The second race of Day 2 of the Louis Vuitton Trophy today brought heartbreak for Mascalzone Latino Audi. A broken jib halyard clip ended an exciting and highly tactical race against Emirates Team New Zealand, who sailed away to win by almost five minutes. However, it was a good day for both Artemis and TeamOrigin, giving them their first points in the regatta Fears that there would be a repeat of yesterday's light and tricky winds were allayed when, after a three-hour wait for a good breeze, competitors and spectators alike were rewarded with superb conditions. Under sunny skies the breeze rose from eight to almost 15 knots during the afternoon over a racecourse that had been set close to shore between the excellent vantage points of North Head and Bastion Point. At the helm of All4One Sébastien Col was unable to match Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy's skills in an exciting pre-start build-up to the first race, and TeamOrigin sped across the line with a 16-metre advantage. After close racing over the first two legs, the British boat romped away from a 27-second delta at the top mark to win by one minute 33 seconds. Race three produced a gripping tacking duel after Synergy, with Karol Jablonski at the helm, crossed the start line ahead of Azzurra. With nine tacks for Synergy and 10 for Azzurra on the first leg it was a major workout for the grinders in 12 to 14 knots of breeze. Azzurra sneaked through at the first mark then, with the Russians staying in hot pursuit until the final mark, made it a 44-second win. At the end of the day Terry Hutchinson and his crew on Artemis sailed a copybook race against Bertrand Pacé's Aleph, timing their start perfectly and extending their lead at every mark to chalk up a powerful win. Azzurra and ETNZ share the series lead so far with two wins apiece.
