Khurram knock in vain for Emirates

The UAE had victory snatched from their grasp as the Netherlands completed a 2-0 series victory in a see-saw ICC World Cricket League match in Deventer.

The UAE had victory snatched from their grasp last night as the Netherlands completed a 2-0 series victory in a see-saw ICC World Cricket League match in Deventer.

Peter Borren (32 not out) and Pieter Seelaar (22 not out) kept their cool to share a 42-run stand for the eighth wicket to win with eight balls to spare after the UAE posted 221 for nine in their 50 overs.

"We played better than we did in the first game [when they were shot out for 96] yet we came up short," Mohammed Sadiq, the team manager, said.

"We were about 30 runs short but we should also give credit to the opposition. The fortunes swung both ways before Borren and Seelaar came together in a solid stand to take the game away from us."

Borren and Seelaar scored their runs mainly in singles before Seelaar smashed Khurram Khan, the captain, for a six to seal the match.

Khurram led by example for the UAE with a top score of 71 and taking two for 45 from 9.4 overs, the standout performance.

The visitors were sent in to bat first and lost Amjad Ali to the third ball, trapped in front by Timm van der Gugten, without a run on the board.

Khurram, who promoted himself to No 3, revived the inning in a 119-run stand for the second wicket with Haroon Iftikhar, who stroked 41 from 77 balls.

Khurram, who struck seven fours and a six in his 85-ball stay, was third out with the score on 125 and Saqib Ali was out to the very next delivery, the second time in two games. Shaiman Anwar (39) and Rohan Mustafa (29) chipped in with useful contributions for the visitors to push the score past 200.

The Netherlands made a bright start, although they lost Wesley Barresi (17) when the score was on 32. Michael Swart smashed 48 from 50 deliveries and with Mudassar Bukhari (29), they took the score to 102 in 19.2 overs.

Manjula Guruge was the pick of the UAE bowlers with two for 34 from his 10 overs.
