AL AIN // Al Jazira ended Al Ain's unbeaten run in round 8 of the Etisalat Pro League at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium. The captain Saleh Obaid opened the scoring and created the next for the Brazilian Fernando Baiano to complete the 2-0 win and leapfrog Al Ain for the second spot in the points standing. Subait Khater celebrated his return by setting up the opening goal against his former team. The set-ball specialist sent a dipping free kick for Obaid to head it neatly into the far corner of the net in the 34th minute. Khater was fined Dh50,000 and banned for a year from the national team and three club matches for breaking a night curfew before the UAE's World Cup qualifying match with Iran last month. Both sides had an early exchange before the visitors drew first blood. The Chile international Jorge Valdivia's free kick sailed over the crossbar and the Brazilian Andre Diaz headed a Valdivia corner wide. And in-between Baiano was off target from inside the area after a solo effort. Abel Braga's pre-match prediction was to score an early goal and his players having achieved it kept pressing hard at the Al Ain defence that had only conceded two goals, in a 2-2 draw with Al Wasl, prior to the match. Al Ain too had their chances towards the end, and Valdivia's rocket went just wide and substitute Faisal Ali's strike was brilliantly palmed off by Ali Kasheif in injury time. Jazira moved to a couple of points behind the leader Al Ahli, who face Al Ain in round 9 this weekend. apassela@thenational.ae
