Teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, and Lebanon as well as the UAE national team will be in action later this month.
International field expected to compete at 9-ball billiards tournament in UAE
A top prize of US$13,000 (Dh47,749) is on offer at the Kolluna Al Emarat Kolluna Khalifa International 9-ball Championship later this month, which is being held to coincide with National Day celebrations.
Players from around the world will compete in the nine-ball pool event, including teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, and Lebanon as well as the UAE national team.
There will be four qualifying rounds — held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah — before 128 players are split into 16 groups.
After round-robin group matches at the Hilton Capital Grand Hotel in Abu Dhabi, between November 23-28, the semi-finals and final will be held at the capital’s Marina Mall on November 29 and 30. The winner takes away the top prize, plus the trophy, while the total prize fund is $53,000.
As well as being part of the 42nd National Day celebrations, one of the aims of the tournament, which is held under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed, chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, is to raise awareness of billiard and snooker sports and encourage more players from the UAE to participate.
As part of the finale, the famous trick shot artist Florian “Venom” Kohler of France will perform at Marina Mall.
Organisers hope the tournament will get the approval of the World Pool-Billiard Association to be run annually.
