WATCH: Kangaroo catches football fever with Socceroos on World Cup duty

On the eve of World Cup 2018, former Australian tennis player Pat Cash had suggested in a tweet that he was not really into football, and that Aussie Rules indeed ruled - at least down under.

Predictably, he got criticised for it, with many Australians swearing allegiance with the beautiful game. He later said he was joking and has been cheering the Socceroos who have put in decent performances in Russia so far.

Australians love football. It turns out even kangaroos don't mind it.

One pitch-invading kangaroo in particular took a fancy to it this week, going to the extent of halting a football match and refusing to leave a stadium in Australia's Canberra on Sunday.

Match video showed the kangaroo laying down on the penalty spot during the half-time break at Deakin Stadium.

The kangaroo was then guided away from the pitch by a vehicle before the match resumed, only for the kangaroo to jump back onto the field for a second time.

After about 30 minutes of making his presence on the pitch, the kangaroo made his final exit before the National Premier League match resumed until full time.

Belconnen United won their away match with two goals, against Canberra FC.

The Kangaroo delayed the second-half kick-off for more than 30 minutes, before leaving briefly and then returning. It was then shepherded out of the stadium safely by the Belconnen coach in his car.
