Real Madrid prepare for Uefa Champions League title defence opener with training session - in pictures

European and world champions take on Roma at the Bernabeu on Wednesday evening

Real Madrid begin the defence of their Uefa Champions League title on Wednesday with a home tie against Italian side Roma.

Ahead of the showdown at the Bernabeu, Madrid players took part in a training session at the club's training base in Valdebebas.

Manager Zinedine Zidane stepped down at the end of the season and the Frenchman has since been replaced by former Spain head coach Julen Lopetegui, while Madrid's all-time record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo ended his nine year stay in Madrid by moving to Italian champions Juventus.

So far, Ronaldo's absence has not been too keenly felt, with Madrid winning three and drawing one of their opening four Primera Liga matches.

Roma, meanwhile, have had a stuttering start to the Serie A season, losing once and drawing twice in their first four league games.
