A goal up on the night and with the tie at 4-4 on aggregate, City needed another to advance to the semi-final. They thought they had it when, deep into injury-time, Raheem Sterling shot past Hugo Lloris. The Etihad went wild in celebration, only for VAR to intervene. Sergio Aguero was marginally offside before squaring to Sterling. Somehow, Spurs advanced on away goals, the decider coming after VAR had been consulted on Fernando Llorente’s bump into the net. Video Assistant Referee was again at the centre of controversy on Wednesday night, in the enthralling Uefa Champions League quarter-final second leg between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

With City leading 4-3 and the aggregate score reading 4-4 in favour of Tottenham on away goals, Raheem Sterling’s stoppage time goal sparked wild celebrations at the Etihad Stadium before it was overruled when VAR adjudged Sergio Aguero offside in the buildup.
