A parachutist landed on the pitch during Sunday's seven-goal Serie A thriller between Sassuolo and Inter Milan in northern Italy.

The game was briefly suspended at Sassuolo's Mapei Stadium two minutes before the break.

Romelu Lukaku was just about to take a penalty when the incident occurred with the Inter Milan striker going on to convert for a 3-1 lead for the visitors.

Broadcaster DAZN did not show images during the live broadcast of the match but the photos soon went viral on social medial in Italy.

The parachutist was quickly escorted off the pitch by security agents at the stadium in Emilia-Romagna.

Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez scored two goals each as Inter survived a late fightback to earn a 4-3 win.

"We did everything right in the first half and should have scored more in the second," Lukaku told DAZN.

"Once it goes to 3-1 and 4-1, it ought to be over. The positive we take is that we got the three points, but we need to defend better than that.

"I'm feeling good but need to work even harder to help out the team for the entirety of matches. I'm happy today because the victory was important for the group. Now, I'll only think about improving still further."

Domenico Beradi, Filip Djuricic and Jeremie Boga scored for the home side who are 16th in the table after their fifth loss of the season.

The result leaves Inter in second place on 21 points, one behind champions Juventus and four clear of Atalanta in third.
