Mohamed Salah watches Liverpool's Mersey masterclass from the bench - pictures
Egyptian striker is given a rare break ahead of busy Premier League festive schedule
Mohamed Salah had an unusual view of Liverpool's Merseyside derby victory over Everton - from the bench.
The Anfield striker has been an integral part of the team's success over the past few seasons as they have grown from strength to strength, and lifted the Champions League trophy in June.
But Salah was rested in the 5-2 victory over Everton, along with Roberto Firmino, proving the attacking force that manager Jurgen Klopp has in his squad.
The German coach said the changes were necessary to ensure his key players could rest in a busy time of the season.
"We can do it," said Klopp. "I have to show the respect for the boys. I like the squad so we have to use it. That's the line-up for the day because we think it will be really intense so for this we need fresh legs."
Liverpool remain eight points clear at the top of the table, and the changes paid of for Klopp with replacements Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri both on the scoresheet.
Salah has scored nine goals this season, including one in the 3-1 defeat of reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
