Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool will need to achieve a record points total if they are going to win the Premier League.

The German saw his side move four points clear at the top after a 2-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday to begin the hectic festive schedule of football in England's top tier.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were both on target to maintain the leaders' unbeaten league campaign and ensure they will be still top when they next take the field on Wednesday against Huddersfield Town at Anfield.

City won the title with a record 100 points last season and Klopp believes Liverpool need to beat that tally if they are to succeed them this term.

Klopp said: "If you want to do the headline 'Klopp says we need 105 points to win the title' then do it.

"I don't know how much any team needs this season but everybody asks me about the situation and says that the last four times the team that was top at Christmas won the league.

"But was it ever such a tight race? If all the other guys win when they play then three or four teams have more than 40 points at Christmas."

Despite being only six points short of the maximum possible after 18 points, Liverpool still have City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea all within range of them with realistic hopes still of becoming champions.

"That's really exceptional," Klopp said of the situation. "So far it looks like a real special season. It is up there, to have 48 points mid December is just crazy."

Liverpool have conceded just seven goals in the league this season with, Alisson Becker keeping 11 clean sheets in that period.

He needed to save from Romain Saiss and Matt Doherty in a first half where Wolves put the visitors under pressure.

Adama Traore twice shot wide before Salah flicked in Fabinho's low cross after 18 minutes.

Van Dijk made the game safe with 20 minutes left, poking in Salah's searching ball.

Klopp added: "He (Van Dijk) is in a good moment and very important for us and hopefully it can stay like this.

"The work-rate in general is outstanding with how we defended.

"I love the boy but the two in front have to run a lot more to make it halfway easier for the centre-halves and they did it again.

"We defended really well and Virgil played a proper part in that."

Wolves missed the chance to go above Manchester United into sixth as their three-game winning run ended, which had come after they had failed to triumph in their previous six matches.

They go to Fulham on Wednesday and manager Nuno Espirito Santo praised his team's performance.

He said: "It was a tough game. They have a very good pace and caused us many problems but we stayed in the game.

"I'm not so happy with the way we conceded but I'm proud of the work of the boys and we keep going.

"This schedule now is going to be tough for all the team."
