Franck Ribery has fiercely defended himself against criticism he received for posting a video of himself eating a gold-coated steak on social media at a restaurant in Dubai.

The 35-year-old Bayern Munich winger and former France international posted the video of a visit to Nusr-Et, a steak house owned by celebrity Turkish restaurateur Salt Bae and rubbing his hands before tucking into a huge chop coated in gold.

Golden steak is one of Salt Bae's signature dishes. A 400g ingot cut of sirloin wrapped with golden leaves costs a whopping Dh1,250.

The ostentatious luxury drew a volley of criticism and on Saturday Ribery took to his Twitter and Instagram accounts to post his own abusive messages at critics.

"Let's start with the envious, the angry, surely born because of a broken condom," read the first of the posts on Ribery's Twitter account, before posting several profanities.

"I owe you nothing, my success is above all thanks to God," the post continued. "To me, to my relatives and to those who believed in me, for the others, you were only pebbles in my socks."

The second message castigated "pseudo-journalists" who are always "negative".

The third was accompanied by a photo of a French celebrity journalist, and contained the quote: "I do what I want with my money."

Ribery has won a host of trophies since joining the Bavarians in 2007 from French club Marseille including the last six Bundesliga titles, five German Cups and the 2013 Uefa Champions League.

The winfer, who is entering the final few months of his contract at Bayern, is currently with the team at their winter training camp in Qatar.
