Sam Allardyce has been sacked as Everton manager after six months in the charge, the Premier League club has announced.

Former England manager Allardyce steered the Merseyside club to a respectable eighth place in the league, having taken over from Ronald Koeman in November with the club 13th and five points above the relegation zone.

Allardyce, 63, still had a year to run on his contract at Goodison Park, but fans had become disgruntled with they way he had shaped his team despite the uptick in results.

In a statement released by the club, professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale said: “On behalf of the Chairman, Board of Directors and Mr Moshiri, I’d like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months. Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that.

“However, we have made the decision that, as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer and will be commencing this process immediately. Again, we’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future.”

His final match was the 3-1 defeat at West Ham and when asked about his future afterwards he said there was "no smoke without fire" following reports suggesting his departure would be imminent.

Fans were given the chance to inform of club of what they thought of Allardyce last month when it sent out a survey asking how much they trusted the manager on a scale of zero to 10. He later received an apology from chairman Bill Kenwright.

Former Watford and Hull City manager Marco Silva, who was Everton's first choice when Allardyce was appointed, has been tipped as his replacement.

The future of Everton's Wayne Rooney has also been in question during the past week, with his representatives having discussed a move to DC United in Major League Soccer.
