The Arabian Gulf Super Cup, the traditional curtain-raiser to the domestic football season, will take place next month in Egypt.

The match, which pits 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League champions Al Jazira against 2017 President’s Cup winners Al Wahda, will be staged at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on September 15.

It marks the second successive year that the Super Cup is held outside the Emirates following last season’s encounter between Jazira and Al Ahli. Hosted at the same venue, Ahli triumphed 2-1.

Walid Al Hosani, Executive CEO of the Professional League Committee, said the transfer of the Super Cup to Egypt is an affirmation of the strong relations between the two countries. The UAE has twice hosted the Egyptian equivalent.

Al Hosani said: ""The PLC aims to achieve several objectives by holding the Arabian Gulf Super Cup outside the country: expanding the fan base of UAE football abroad, providing a platform for Emirati teams and players to showcase their skills abroad to reflect the progress of UAE football. These matches also contribute to attracting larger numbers of football fans in Egypt to learn more about UAE football and follow the PLC competitions".

The new Arabian Gulf League season kicks off on September 16, although the Arabian Gulf Cup gets under way officially on September 8. Al Ain play their opening match in that competition against Hatta four days earlier because of their Asian Champions League quarter-final second leg at Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal on September 11.
