Technical level and attacking play delight fans
Fifa congratulate local organising committee for successful tournament
ABU DHABI // Rafael Salguero, chairman of the organising committee for the Fifa Under 17 World Cup, hailed the UAE for fulfilling all the expectations of a successful championship.
“The quality of football has been exceptionally high and the statistics show a high technical level of play and the high number of goals scored shows the open football played by the teams,” he said on Thursday at the Fairmont Hotel.
“The total number of goals scored in the championship is only two away from the all-time record with the play-off for third and the final still to play.
“When we talk about the technical level, we have seen some remarkable play by the teams and some spectacular matches. The fitness levels of some teams were really incredible.
“The UAE closes a chapter of the U17 World Cup setting a very high standard in terms of both the quality of the football played and the excellent organisation.”
Salguero dismissed the notion of overage players in the competition, saying: “Fifa have closely monitored the ages of the players and we are satisfied because no teams have made any protests.”
Mohammed bin Bdua, the tournament director of the Under 17 World Cup and head of the local organising committee, which staged the biggest tournament in the country’s history, said the technical level in the event was higher than the last U20 World Cup.
“This is a new generation of players and what we have seen here in this tournament and many of these players will have a great future ahead,” he said.
“As host, we have the satisfaction of being associated in organising one of the most successful U17 World Cup’s. We would not have accomplishment this achievement without the support of our government.”
