Fernando Alonso takes pole for the British Grand Prix

The Ferrari driver edges out Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher in a wet qualifying session.

Wet conditions at Silverstone made driving tough for a number of drivers, including Sauber's Sergio Perez, who qualified 17th.

Fernando Alonso will start tomorrow's British Grand Prix from pole position after setting the quickest time during a rain interrupted qualifying session.

The world championship leader clocked a time of 1 minute 51.746 seconds around the damp Silverstone circuit to edge out Red Bull Racing's Mark Webber by just 0.047secs.

A heavy rain storm forced the session to be stopped half way through part two of the session, with proceedings resuming an hour later.

Michael Schumacher was third in his Mercedes GP ahead of world champion Sebastian Vettel, with Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa completing the top five.

It was a disappointing day for McLaren-Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton could do no better than eighth, with Jenson Button being eliminated in the first part of qualifying, ensuring he starts 18th.
