The Dubai Desert Triathlon, scheduled for April 19, swaps out swimming in the traditional triathlon structure and replaces it with endurance horseback riding.
Dubai offering triathlon with running, cycling ... and horse riding
Well, this is a new one.
We just witnessed the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon here a couple weeks ago, and now it turns out Dubai is putting on a triathlon as well.
With a twist.
As is customary in triathlons, running and cycling will be involved. Less customary in triathlons, but befitting of the the competition’s name – Dubai Desert Triathlon – swimming will be swapped out for endurance horse riding.
The triathlon will consist of a 5km run, a 25 km bike and another 25km on horseback.
It’s being billed as the first of its kind in the world (and, to be honest, is there any reason to doubt that?) and makes for a pretty interesting, certainly unique new event.
Because there presumably aren’t many world-class triathletes who train for running and cycling and then ride horses in their free time, organisers have formatted it to accommodate 200 teams made up of three athletes, one in each discipline.
However, they will still award individual winners who compete across all three disciplines.
The race will take place on April 19 at Dubai International Endurace City. Those interested in registering can do so here.
