Double delight for Princess Haya at Royal Ascot

Jockey William Buick is 'a passenger' as Newfangled makes it two wins for the owner after Joviality's triumph on Wednesday.

Newfangled, right, had an impressive run and unchallenged from start to finish to win The Albany Stakes.

Newfangled proved a different class to her opponents to hand Princess Haya another win at Royal Ascot in the Albany Stakes.

Joviality struck in the Windsor Forest Stakes on Wednesday and Newfangled, the daughter of New Approach, had created a big impression when successful on her Newmarket introduction a fortnight ago and followed up in this six-furlong Group Three.

A smart start meant she was in front from the outset and it was clear after a furlong that she was going to take some catching.
William Buick asked his mount to quicken at the halfway stage and she readily put daylight between her rivals in impressive style.

Newfangled passed the post with a comfortable two and a half lengths in hand over Agent Allison, who just denied Premier Steps the runner-up spot.

Owner Princess Haya of Jordan said: “She’s by New Approach and it’s wonderful to have her - it’s a huge honour.

“It’s such an honour to be here and to win here - just to be part of it is amazing.”

Buick said: “I was a passenger. It wasn’t really the plan (to make the running) because there was a strong headwind and I’d made my mind up at the start to sit in behind one or two.

“She jumped first - nothing else jumped in front of me - and when you fight a racehorse there’s only one winner.

“She ran out of my hands and she picked up very well.

“She’s a lovely filly and has a lot of quality. I’ve liked her all along and it’s nice to have another winner at Royal Ascot for Princess Haya.

“When she won at Newmarket we knew she was above average.

“For the moment, six (furlongs) is her trip but she may develop into a miler next year.”

Gosden said: “It was the plan to settle in behind but she had other ideas.

“We wanted to take her back because there’s a strong headwind and you want to sit in behind like a Formula One driver and get in the slipstream, but she`s got a lot of natural speed.

“She’s been very athletic from the word go and we’ve always liked her - even when she won at 10-1 we liked her.

“We’ll just go quietly now - Lowther, Cheveley Park, that sort of route - and then have a little holiday.

“Today you’d say she isn’t a miler, but at home you’d say she could do any trip.

“It’s my job to settle her down.”
