Delgado determined to keep ball rolling

Even with their first league championship secured, Al Jazira will not back off in their final four games, Matias Delgado said.

Even with their first league championship secured, Al Jazira will not back off in their final four games, Matias Delgado said.

"It is difficult to wait for the end of the season, but we are professionals and we have to stay focused till the last game," the Argentine midfielder said. "We have not lost a game this season, so it is important that we win the remaining games, as well. That will be a big motivation."

No club has finished unbeaten in the domestic top flight, but Jazira have 14 victories and four draws in 18 matches as they prepare to meet Kalba tomorrow.

Delgado is in his first season with the club, which has seen them win the double of President's Cup and the Pro League title.

"I am very happy, but I am not the player who won these two cups," he said. "It's the coaches and the players who have been working for many years for this. So more credit to them than any of us.

"The belief in ourselves, that has been the secret. Every player has done his job. In the second part of the season, with Ricardo Oliveira, the team has really gone up. In the first half, Ibrahim Diaky made a lot of goals. So it was a good balance right through the year.

"Now we have to continue with this mentality because we need to show why we have won this title."

He is looking forward to having compatriot Diego Maradona in the Pro League, at Al Wasl, but said he would not push to play for him. "I have a contract with Al Jazira. I would love to play for Diego, but only if he comes to Al Jazira, and having said that I hope [current Jazira coach] Abel Braga stays here for many years."
