De la Red's playing future in doubt
MADRID // Ruben de la Red's football future was in doubt today after the Real Madrid President Ramon Calderón revealed that the Spain international could be suffering from a heart problem. De la Red collapsed on the field during Madrid's Copa del Rey match at Real Union on Oct 30 and spent the night in hospital. The Galacticos star, 23, has yet to appear in Real shirt since the 3-2 defeat as club doctors continue to run tests to determine the nature of the midfielder's condition.
"De la Red suffered a heart problem," Calderón told radio station Cadena SER. "All of the tests that have been done haven't detected anything abnormal." Calderón said that De la Red would not play until doctors were assured that his health was not in jeopardy. De la Red fell face first as he was walking away from the penalty area in the 13th minute, silencing the crowd at Real Union's Gal Stadium.
He required treatment for two minutes on the field before being carried off on a stretcher, having appeared to recover consciousness. De la Red was a member of Spain's Euro 2008 winning squad in June. *AP
