WEST BROMWICH // Peter Crouch scored a spectacular equaliser for Portsmouth before a Scott Carson howler almost cost West Brom side dearly as they stayed bottom of the Premier League. West Brom skipper Jonathan Greening had scored his first goal of the campaign in the first half with his team the better side. The home team, who had only taken one point from their last eight games missed a golden chance to break the deadlock on 23 minutes when Chris Brunt bent a shot wide of David James' post.

Sol Campbell conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position 20 yards out after fouling Ishmael Miller - and it led to the Baggies taking the lead after 39 minutes. Greening was on hand to convert the rebound after Brunt's vicious free-kick had hit the crossbar. However, Pompey came out for the second period with more intent and equalised on 58 minutes. It was some strike too. Referee Mike Dean played a good advantage after Sean Davis was chopped down by Jonas Olsson. The ball broke to Crouch who could have played in Jermain Defoe but elected to shoot from 25 yards. It was the right decision as the ball took a slight nick off a defender and flew in off Carson's bar.

And, as both sides piled forward for the win in the last 10 minutes, Carson fumbled a harmless Glenn Johnson centre in his own goalmouth. It looked like it might have crossed the line but the linesman's flag stayed down * PA Sport
