Mumbai Indians rose to second in the Indian Premier League table after crushing Delhi Capitals by 40 runs at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Thursday.

Rahul Chahar took 3-19 in a four-over spell that proved devastating for Delhi. Chasing 169 to win, the home team were cruising on 49-0 when the leg-spinner bowled out top-scorer Shikhar Dhawan (35) in the seventh over. He and Krunal Pandya dismissed Prithvi Shaw (20), Dhawan’s opening partner, and Colin Munro (3) in quick succession.

And by the time the 19-year-old Rajasthan cricketer bowled out captain Shreyas Iyer, also for three, the writing was on the wall for the Capitals.

Axar Patel (26) and Chris Morris (11) were the only other Delhi players to reach double figures in what was otherwise a forgettable batting performance even as they stayed in the hunt for a spot in the play-offs. They are third in the IPL table behind Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai.

Earlier in the day, Krunal top-scored for the visitors with 37 as the Indians posted a competitive 168-5 in their 20 overs. At the time, it looked like captain Rohit Sharma's call to bat first after winning the toss would backfire, but it was still a good total given at one stage Mumbai were 74-3.

Hardik Pandya, Krunal's younger brother and fellow all-rounder, made a quickfire 32 from 15 balls. There were also cameos from Rohit (30), Quinton de Kock (35) and Suryakumar Yadav (26).

But it was Hardik who was named Man of the Match as he also took the wicket of Kagiso Rabada and was excellent on the field.

Mumbai next face Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Saturday, while Delhi host Kings XI Punjab on the same day.
