The UAE have made five changes from the side they fielded for the Under 19 Asia Cup when they named their World Cup squad on Monday night.

Omar Mohammed, Mohammed Hamid, Dhurva Praveen, Shiv Mehra and Waruna Perera are the new names in the squad from the one that played in the U19 tri-series between England and Pakistan, and the Asia Cup, which were part of the UAE’s preparation for the World Cup, which is being held in the Emirates next month.

“We have made a few changes after seeing some of them in the tri-series and the Asia Cup,” said Aaqib Javed, the UAE coach.

“We have strengthened the batting after trying out a few spinners of which some didn’t perform to the expected levels and a couple of them also had suspect illegal bowling actions.

“The squad will continue training four days a week at the ICC Global Cricket Academy and play a few games with club teams as well until it is time for them to play in the World Cup.”

Aaqib flew to New Zealand this morning with the senior national team for the ICC World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. During his absence Colin Wells and Ijaz Ahmed will be in charge of the U19 squad.

Wells, who was appointed as the UAE’s batting consultant, has been working with the youth team alongside Javed for four months. He coached the senior team from January 2009 to July 2010.

Ijaz, who has played 60 Tests and 250 one-day internationals for Pakistan, will assist Wells in Aaqib’s absence. “The groundwork has been done and the boys are in the capable hands of Colin and Ijaz,” Aaqib said.
