Cape Blanco takes Arlington Million stakes
Cape Blanco, trained by Aiden O'Brien, came ahead of Gio Ponti for the third time this season in winning Saturday’s 29th running of the Grade I Arlington Million stakes race at Arlington Park in the United States.
"Gio Ponti must be sick of the sight of us,” Alex Cole, the racing manager to Jim and Fitri Hay, the Dubai-based part owners, told the Chicago Sun Times.
The two horses clashed at the Dubai World Cup in March, with Cape Blanco coming fourth one place ahead of Gio Ponti.
The pair duelled last month in the Grade 1 Man O'War Stakes at Belmont Park, with Jamie Spencer, Cape Blanco's partner, riding a near perfect race to outwit Ramon Dominguez.
“He’s had quite a long year and he kicked off the season in Dubai. We met [Gio Ponti] three times and three times he’s [lost]. Gio Ponti didn’t have the greatest run here.”
