MADRID // Sergio Ramos and Ruud van Nistelrooy were on target to lead Real Madrid to a 2-0 win over 10-man BATE Borisov in Group H of the Champions League. Ramos scored in the 11th minute from a Guti pass before the prolific Dutch striker van Nistelrooy scored his 54th goal in 69 Champions League games just before the hour-mark. The Belarusians' task was made nearly impossible in the 63rd minute when defender Anri Khagush was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Madrid, who have won the European Cup a record nine-times, did not allow BATE a shot on goal in the second half and the only wonder is how the score was kept to two after Los Galacticos had no fewer than 27 attempts on goal. The BATE goalkeeper Sergei Veremko must take some of the credit for that after he stopped substitute Gonzalo Higuain and Rafael van der Vaart from close range. The Spanish champions pick up their first points of this season's Group H Champions League campaign Madrid alongside the Italian's Juventus, who beat Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 in the other Group H game.
