Barzalona climbs aboard on Delegator for Godolphin

The Epsom winner and teenage jockey will take over the reins in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

Mickael Barzalona, celebrating aboard Pour Moi after winning The Investec Derby, hopes to be doing more of the same when he rides Delegator on Saturday in the Golden Jubliee at Royal Ascot.

Mickael Barzalona has been given the plum ride by Godolphin aboard Delegator in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

The teenage jockey defied all convention when he gave Pour Moi an audacious ride in the English Derby last Saturday, taking the colt from last to first to win the Classic on his first attempt.

The victory was Barzalona's eighth success in Britain this season from just 19 mounts, six of which have been in Godolphin's royal blue silks. The 19 year old has ridden for Godolphin since September 2009, and Simon Crisford, the Dubai-based operation's racing manager, had little hesitation giving the ride to Barzalona.

"Mickael is set to ride for us on the last two days of Ascot when his main ride will be Delegator in the Golden Jubilee," Crisford said.

Barzalona will replace Frankie Dettori, the No 1 Godolphin jockey, after the Italian was banned for the last two days of Ascot.

Crisford said Godolphin will be represented in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday by the Mahmood al Zarooni-trained pair of Debussy and Rewilding. He also confirmed that both Sajjhaa and Anna Salai will represent the Maktoum family's private stable in the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes, also run on Wednesday. Opinion Poll and Holberg will feature in the Gold Cup on Thursday, and Khawlah will line up in the Ribblesdale Stakes over 2,400m on the same day. "All the Royal Ascot horses seem to be doing well and we are looking forward to next week," Crisford said.

Elsewhere, Jaber Abdullah, the UAE businessman, suffered a setback to his Royal Ascot ambitions yesterday when Lady Of The Desert was ruled out of the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes, run on Tuesday.
