Al Jazira's Asian Champions League ambitions were dealt a serious blow after a 3-1 away defeat to Al Jaish last night at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium left them firmly rooted to the bottom of Group A.
Wagner Ribeiro, the Brazilian midfielder, scored either side of a Mahir Yousef strike for the Qatar club's first win of the campaign, giving them four points from their three fixtures, while Luis Milla's Jazira side have accumulated just one point.
The Pro League club side were always facing a mountain to climb after finding themselves two goals down inside of 15 minutes.
Ribeiro was on target from 12 yards with a quality finish from a Saad Al Shammari cross on six minutes and Yousef doubled the advantage nine minutes later when he fired home from just inside the area after Mohammed El Sayed created space for his teammate.
Subait Khater inspired hopes of a second-half revival as his expertly taken free kick in first-half injury time allowed the Abu Dhabi club to reduce the arrears as they headed in for the half-time break.
However, Ribeiro extinguished all hopes of a Jazira comeback with his second of the night to cap a man-of-the-match performance with a goal at 58 minutes.
The defeat to Jaish was Jazira's fourth in all competitions under Milla with two draws and the solitary win in the Etisalat Cup semi-finals over Al Wahda since the Spaniard took over from the Brazilian Paulo Bonamigo in February.
