Anaheim end their win duck

The Anaheim Ducks record their first win of the season by shutting out the previously undefeated San Jose Sharks.

LOS ANGELES // The Anaheim Ducks recorded their first win of the season by shutting out the previously undefeated San Jose Sharks 4-0 on Friday. Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 38 saves in his 30th career shut-out and the Ducks got four goals from four different players. "It feels really good," Gigueresaid. "We still have a lot of room for improvement, but this is a good start."

The victory allowed Anaheim to avoid their worst start in franchise history, which was set in 2003-04. The Ducks, Stanley Cup champions in 2007, jumped on top with a goal from Francois Beauchemin after 18.13. Ryan Getzlaf was credited with an assist on the score, his first point of the season after tallying 84 last year. "Right off that goal, we got a lot of life," said the defenceman Chris Pronger. "It was desperate times, especially with the way we played the first three games."

Travis Moen made it two after 3.56 in the second and Pronger and centre Samuel Pahlsson added further scores in the third. Rob Niedermayer recorded two assists for Anaheim. The Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov allowed all four goals after surrendering just four in his first three starts. San Jose entered the contest atop the Pacific Division in goals scored, but came up blank against the Ducks. The Sharks penetrated Anaheim's defence and had plenty of looks at goal with a 38-20 advantage in shots, but Giguere turned every one away.

Anaheim will hope for a second win when they host the Carolina Panthers tonight. * Reuters
