DUBAI // Sohail al Marzouqi kept his cool when it mattered most to win the UAE Nationals Monthly Medal at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa at the weekend.

A key member of the UAE team that won the recent GCC Junior Championship in Bahrain, Sohail played a solid tee-to-green game to beat a strong field which included many top names such as Khalid Yousuf.

Riding on five net birdies, including three on the back nine, Sohail carded 38 points to take the honours, one point ahead of Mohammed Darwish and Abdullah al Muharrami.

Both Darwish and al Muharrami shot 37 points, but the former managed to finish runner-up on countback.

Yousuf, the country's No 1 player, took the gross prize with a 74, and Faris al Mazroui (34 points) and Ahmed al Hosseni (35) won Division A and Division B respectively.

The day, however, belonged to the fast-improving al Marzouqi, who reeled off 17 points on the front nine and 21 on the back nine, the highlight being a gross birdie on the par three 11th hole.

Saeed Albudoor, the general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation, hailed the enthusiasm of the players for making the event a great success.

"Despite strong winds and dust, we had some very good scores and that reflects on the growing maturity of the players," he said.
