Abu Dhabi has won the right to host the 2020 Fina Short Course World Swimming Championships.

The announcement was made in Kazan, Russia and saw the UAE capital beat competition from Peruvian capital Lima and Almmati in Kazakhstan.

The event will take place a decade after fellow emirate Dubai hosted the short course world championships in 2010.

Abu Dhabi has recent history with hosting top-level swimming events having hosted a stop on the Fina Open Water World Cup series this year.

Occurring every two years, the short course world championships will see the world’s finest sprinters race over 25m.

Prior to the Abu Dhabi event, Windsor in Canada will host the championships in 2016 before Hangzhou, China in 2018.

Abu Dhabi’s version will take on added significance given it falls in an Olympic year.
