Speeding while using the phone is the number one cause of fatal accidents in Sharjah, according to police.
Lieutenant Colonel Khalid Al Kay, deputy director of the emirate's traffic and patrol department told Arabic daily Al Bayan that drivers aged between 18 and 30 are most likely to speed excessively.
"The last such violation was of a young man driving his motorbike at 270kmh on Sharjah ring road, this is irresponsible and shows how unaware he is of the grave consequences of such manner on the road," said Colonel Al Kay.
Throughout this year, Sharjah police have been running numerous awareness campaigns with the aim of reducing fatalities on the emirate's roads to three per 100,000.
"However we can't achieve this goal without the help of educational institutions, government bodies and road users," he said.
In the first six months of this year, 6,511 drivers were fined for distracted driving in Sharjah, the majority of which was for the use of mobile phones while behind the wheel. Violators received an Dh800 fine each and four black points.
Last year, more than 1300 speeding violations were registered by Sharjah police.
