The death sentence for Alaa Al Hashemi given by the State Security division of the Federal Supreme Court on June 29 was carried out by firing squad yesterday morning. Justice has been served swiftly, as it should be, and now it is time to move on from this frightening aberration to life in the UAE.
This case demonstrated that our society is governed by the rule of law and that these sorts of heinous and unusual crimes will be dealt with in the most serious manner. One reason why this crime was so shocking is because we are fortunate to be relatively free from senseless acts of violence against innocents such as Ibolya Ryan.
Al Hashemi’s goal was to attack UAE society rather than a particular person. The best way to show the utter failure of her goal and to repudiate her use of violence is for all of us to continue exhibiting the values of tolerance and coexistence of which this country deserves to be proud.
