The Indian Oscar entry Gully Boy, while inspiring, was too similar to Slumdog Millionaire. Both are rags-to-riches stories about a boy from Mumbai’s slums.
The films that India should send to the Oscars must be local yet universally appealing. The movies must come to grips with social issues in developing countries. Pink starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu could have been a good pick. The film shows how three innocent girls are framed by a powerful politician. Meanwhile Article 15, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, is about a young police officer who takes on the local mafia to save a girl who was kidnapped and raped.
Next year, India should consider submitting Deepika Padukone’s film Chhapaak to the academy. The movie is about an acid attack survivor.
Audiences are beginning to realise that Indian cinema is more than just Bollywood. Some of these movies might be pessimistic. However, they can tell India’s true stories.

Sentence for the New Delhi rapists should be carried out swiftly
I write to you in reference to your news item Hanging of New Delhi rapists pushed back to February 1 (January 17).
The four people who have been convicted for a brutal gang rape case in 2012 have had their death sentences postponed to February 1. This might not be good news to the victim’s parents who are waiting for justice to be served.
It took Indian justice seven years to pronounce this judgement, so postponing the sentence for these criminals is not a good idea.
This verdict should serve as an example for people who are inclined to commit such heinous crimes.
I believe that handing the death sentence to these individuals is the best way for justice to be served.

Cheap technology is starting to challenge high-end tech brands
I write to you in reference to Alkesh Sharma's article High-end audio product manufacturer Bose to close 119 stores (January 17).
This is not surprising. Bose’s products are too expensive and there are plenty of cheaper audio tech products available out there.
