Yoga at the Top, Burj Khalifa

It just might be the highest yoga class ever taught.

The Burj Khalifa is a magnificent building good for many things: staring at, serving as a base for daring feats by the actor Tom Cruise and now, perhaps the highest outdoor location for a yoga class.

Fitness First is behind this new venture, which kicked off last weekend.

The first week was sold out, with a class of 33 people gathering on the outdoor observation deck for an hour of poses led by the firm but fun teacher Fran Diaz. The 31-year-old Fitness First trainer and yoga instructor, who is from the Philippines and has been in the UAE for five years, was the first to recognise that the morning was special.

“It’s really exciting, because it’s like doing yoga at the top of the world,” she said after the class. “I couldn’t even sleep last night. It’s the icon of Dubai.”

The proceedings were slightly windy, a little bit, but not too hot, and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It was fun being inside The Dubai Mall that early, too, to hear the morning sound test of the fire alarm and see the observation deck staff all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

There are two more classes before Ramadan so hurry and book for your chance to start the weekend this way. The organisers are working on plans to continue the weekly classes after the break. Dh125 for Fitness First members, Dh150 for non-members. Go to www.atthetop.ae to book tickets.
