On July 1, The National got to road test the latest innovation in indoor cycling: The Trip.

We took part in the first-ever class in the Middle East, at GFX in Business Bay, Dubai. The latest regimen from famed fitness company Les Mills, The Trip was launched after two years of development, and is billed as "immersive exercise".

It saw us on static bikes in a darkened room, facing a huge curved screen. In front of us, a huge virtual world began to unfold - complete with a great soundtrack - and we set off along the make-believe path ahead of us. For 40 crazy minutes, we were lost in a world of computer visuals, literally cycling through a computer game. We powered up hills, shot down stomach-churning drops and flat out raced around a crowd-filled arena.

As Glen Stollery, the head of Les Mills Middle East, explained: "We wanted to bring technology into an exercise space and open it up to a new market. Bring millennials in, and merge exercise and tech into one experience. We call it excer-tainment."

The Trip is only available at GFX gym (050 996 9470) in Business Bay. Check out the video of the first two minutes of The Trip (routine number 9) here.
