Many of us consider it easier to just take a carry-on bag when travelling a short distance for a few days. Now Etihad Airways has come to the party by officially launching hand baggage-only fares across selected destinations.

The airline’s “deal fares” include a free carry-on baggage allowance of seven kilograms and can be availed on flights between Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Azerbaijan.

The move comes after a trial late last year, and according to Etihad Airways Chief Commercial Officer Robin Kemark: “Purchasing behaviour demonstrated guests appreciate having more choice and like to be able to select the travel option that best meets their needs.”

Passengers are still able to add checked baggage after purchasing the “deal fare” if they require it and Etihad Guest members can continue to a free checked baggage allowance from 10 to 20 kilograms, depending on their status.

The hand baggage only fares come less than two months after the carrier introduced a seat selection fee on all economy class trips.

It was reported in June that Emirates was considering its own hand baggage only options, but nothing official has been announced.
