UAE-based travellers will soon be able to fly to two new destinations in Jordan and Greece, with the launch of direct routes to Thessaloniki and Aqaba.

The new flights, which will start in June, bring the number of destinations now offered by the airline to 102 points in 46 countries and mean travellers will no longer have to transit through the countries' capitals, or tackle long journeys by road.

Flights to Thessaloniki will operate three times a week from June 15, with return tickets costing from Dh2,005 including taxes. The flight takes five hours and gives tourists direct access to Halkidiki and other Greek holiday hotspots. The port city, 500km from the capital Athens, is the country's second-largest, and is situated in the north of the country with an attractive waterfront and hundreds of historic sights, the most visible of which is the White Tower, which dates from the Ottoman Era. Other historic structures include the 4th-century Arch of Galerius, the Byzantine wall, Roman Rotunda and Ancient Agora.

Flights to Jordan's southern port city of Aqaba on the Red Sea will operate four times a week from June 16, with return fares from Dh1,535 per person including taxes. The flight takes 3.5 hours. This route will be particularly useful for tourists whose main reason for visiting Jordan is the ancient Nabatean city of Petra or the desert of Wadi Rum.

The capital Amman is a 330km, four-hour drive from Aqaba, while the distance from Aqaba to Petra is 125km and Wadi Rum is just 60km, less than an hour's drive. Visitors to Aqaba, which has seen extensive hotel development in the past 15 years, can also go diving in the Red Sea before their flight back.

Earlier this year, Flydubai announced the launch of other new routes for 2018, including Tivat, Krakow, Dubrovnik, Catania, Kutaisi, Qabala and Batumi from March onwards.
