A three-day holiday literally meaning 'the feast of breaking fast,' Eid al Fitra begins when the new moon that marks the end of Ramadan is sighted. It is a time of celebration, especially for those who have been fasting and denying themselves the pleasures of life that are normally taken for granted. In many households, gifts are exchanged.
Most shops return to their usual timings during Eid and restaurants resume serving food during the daylight hours.
