A global survey by G.F Smith has ascertained that the world’s favourite colour is “Marrs Green”.  Thousands of people in over 100 countries were asked to vote for their favourite hue, and this unassuming shade of teal emerged victorious.

G.F Smith, which has specialised in the creation of paper products since 1885, released its findings during Paper City, an exhibition currently underway in Hull in England. The winning shade was revealed via a cascade of paper helicopters, released over Hull’s Humber Street.

Marrs Green resonates with people because it references a return to nature, suggests Caroline Till, director of Franklin Till Studio and editor of Viewpoint Colour Magazine. "As the contemporary condition of 'nature deficit' rises in the context of increasingly urban and digital lifestyles, we seek to reconnect with the natural world, hence the current global popularity of the colour green. In these uncertain times, where political and social upheaval has become the norm, we crave the calming tranquillity of green and its association with the reassuring certainty of nature's cycles."

Hull has been named as the UK City of Culture for 2017 and is hosting a series of related events, including this ten-day celebration of paper. Creative minds from the worlds of art, design and architecture have designed installations For Paper City using G.F Smith’s products. The installations are being presented in and around Hull city centre until July 9.

“In a world of transient communication and fleeting digital memories, paper offers texture and feeling, weight and sensation,” says the Paper City website.

In a further celebration of the world’s favourite shade, a dedicated pop-up shop has been set up on Humber Street, selling a collection of British products customised in Marrs Green. Iconic objects by Tokyo Bike, Anglepoise lamps, Sunspel, Cambridge Satchel Company, H Furniture, Richard Brendon and Plain Pins, along with a selection of stationery products from G. F Smith, will be sold here for the duration of Paper City, before being transferred to G.F Smith’s London Show Space on July 12.
