World Music Day performances

Catch a screening of the 1971 classic Robert Stevenson film Bedknobs and Broomsticks followed by the 1952 Japanese film Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa at Cinema Space. The Disney musical fantasy stars Angela Lansbury as Miss Price, an apprentice witch who hosts orphans Charlie, Carrie and Paul, and treats them to memorable adventures. Ikiru is about Kanji (Takashi Shimura), a civil servant who learns what it means to live a balanced life in his final days.

As part of the Photographs: An Early Album of the World exhibition at Louvre Abu Dhabi, see the documentary Manufactured Landscapes about the work of artists Edward Burtynsky, famous for his large-scale photographs. His subjects are quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines and dams, which despite being debris, are portrayed as “stunning” and “beautiful”. The film sees Burtynsky travel to China as he documents the evidence and effects of the country’s industrial revolution, raising questions about ethics and aesthetics.

Catch a screening of Lean of Pete, the 2015 film by Andrew Haigh about a boy’s search for belonging. Charley, 15, lives with his troubled father on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, where Charley takes a job at a local racetrack to help make ends meet. He meets Del (Steve Buscemi), a jaded trainer, and Bonnie (Chloe Sevigny), a burnt-out jockey, while caring for an ageing horse named Lean on Pete. When Del announces that Pete will be sold, Charley takes it upon himself to try and save his equine friend.

The Cinem’Art series, which will run Tuesdays throughout July, kicks off at Louvre Abu Dhabi with a screening of At Eternity’s Gate. Julian Schnabel’s 2019 film stars Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh and it depicts moments from Van Gogh’s life, inspired by the painting The Dance Hall in Arles. The class is part of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Photographs: An Early Album of the World programme and lets participants explore the exhibition on the first day, and build a camera to experiment with composition, space and light. See the exhibition The Universality of Family Photographs, the latest iteration in the Lest We Forget series, which builds on the 2015-2016 exhibition Emirati Family Photographs 1950-1999. Learn about the commonalities in unrelated images from the UAE and Spain taken in the final decades of the 20th century and viewed side by side. A talk will be held on the opening night starting at 5.30pm.

Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts

See a series of nine newly commissioned works by artists from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine in the exhibition Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts. The works explore the origins of six of the most influential alphabets in the Middle East, including Phoenician, Aramaic and Early Arabic, through drawings, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, fashion and furniture that represent Middle Eastern history.

The Galleria Al Maryah Island marks the Year of Tolerance with an exhibition of photographs in collaboration with the National Archive. View never-before-seen images of historical moments that commemorate Sheikh Zayed. The collection highlights the values that the Year of Tolerance represents and the images span from 1965 to 1990.

Codices of Mexico: The Old Books of the New World exhibition

Visit Qasr Al Watan and see a new exhibition that features historical treasures from ancient Mexico on display in the library. Codices of Mexico: The Old Books of the New World brings a number of priceless pre-Hispanic works dating from the 3rd to the 16th century to the region. The treasures featured in the exhibition are among the most significant sources of information about the ancient cultures of Mexico, preserving the ancestral wisdom of the native peoples of the nation.

See the exhibition Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co (1900-1939) and experience Paris in the roaring twenties, when artists from across Europe came together to express themselves, resulting in a wave of innovative art. There are more than 80 works presented for the first time in the Middle East, including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Juan Gris, Constantin Brancusi, Tamara de Lempicka and more. Emirati Traditional Games

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi presents the second edition of the Emirati Traditional Games exhibition, which celebrates the cultural games and overall heritage of the UAE. Artworks displayed are inspired by the games Emirati children created in the past, including Al Sagala, Al Gaheef, Um Al Iyal, Khoosa Boosa and Adim Al Sira. Emirati artists participating include Afra Al Dhaheri, Abdalla Al Mulla, Salama Nasib, Eman Al Hashemi and Aya Riad.
