The global Cronuts craze has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi.

The New York pastry, a hybrid of a croissant and a doughnut, is now available in the capital from Blossom Sweets. The Muroor Road sweet shop now joins Dubai’s delivery-only Butter Dessert Salon in selling the trendy dessert.

Blossom Sweets’ entry into the cronuts market began after the shop’s managing director Amna Al Hashly went on a culinary pilgrimage to New York City last month to try the treat at its original home: Dominique Ansel Bakery.

“We got there at 7am and there was this massive line all the way down the street,” she recalls. “We waited for nearly two hours until we finally had a chance to try it.”

Al Hashly still savours that first bite of her rose-flavoured Cronut. “It tasted so good,” she says. “I would say it’s a mix of an éclair with a doughnut and croissant. So it’s actually three in one.”

Deciding cronuts needed to be part of the Blossom Sweets menu, Al Hashly got to work with her chef to create their own version.

The end results are the rose flavour and the Nutella with salted nuts variations, available at Dh18 a piece.

Al Hashly says she’s happy with the customer feedback. “They said it was not exactly the same but they did enjoy the taste,” she said. “But this is only the beginning and we want to develop the process even further.”

Al Hashly promises more flavours in the future, with a zaatar cronut hitting the shelves soon.

The cronuts will be available at Blossom Sweets from 4pm this week before being served from midday onwards beginning on Sunday.
