Royal baby name predictions for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

From Arthur and Alexander, to Spencer and Philip – here's what we think the royal couple could call their baby boy

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had their baby boy, but we’re none the wiser when it comes to his name.

On May 6, at 5.26am the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed Baby Sussex at London’s Portland Hospital. We have been promised a name along with a first look at the tot and photographs on Wednesday, May 8, but until then we can only debate what the little one will be called.

When greeting the press on May 6, a visibly delighted Prince Harry said he and Meghan are "still thinking about names".

"The baby's a little bit overdue, so we have a little bit of time to think about it," he added.

Here, we weigh up the possible monikers for the new baby boy ...

A tradition of family names

Although the mum-to-be is new to The Firm, it's unlikely that the couple will stray too far away from royal naming norms – it is said that Queen Elizabeth II approves the baby name, and she is notified of the name and gender before anyone else.

Obviously, not being able to meet his mom it is so important to me, to know that she is a part of this with us.

Meghan Markle on Princess Diana

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have kept it very classic with their name choices – George, Charlotte and Louis – and it is expected that the Sussexes will do the same.

Alexander, Arthur, Albert and Philip, are hot suggestions. Philip would honour Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Harry’s grandfather.

A potential curve-ball could be Spencer or Francis, as a nod to Harry's mother, the late Princess Diana. Diana was born Diana Frances Spencer, so it was her maiden name and Spencer is a typical boys name. Frances could be respelled as Francis for their son.

A baby Charles, or Charlie, would honour both Harry's father, Prince Charles, and his uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, Princess Diana's brother. Spencer was mentioned in the birth announcement, along with the senior royals, which read: "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news."

The couple's baby is now seventh in line to the throne, therefore extremely unlikely to become king or queen. So it's possible that a more modern name could be chosen.

Prince Harry's cousin, Zara Tindall, is mum to girls Mia Grace and Lena Elizabeth with rugby player, Mike Tindall.

The five most popular boys name in the UK are Oliver, Harry, George, Noah and Jack, while across the pond in the Duchess' native USA, Jackson, Liam, Noah, Aiden and Caden rated as the most popular names in 2018.
