In the June, 1938 issue of Action Comics – in newsstands several weeks earlier – the world was introduced to a new crimefighter, penned by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster; with the arrival of Superman, the superhero genre was born. Far from being just an indestructible champion of justice, his story has twisted and turned to include alternative universes, a raft of villains and even a few love interests, but, after 75 years, he’s still looking good. Happy birthday, Superman! With illustrations by Martin Gee for The National we honour Mr Kent here.
