Celebrations also kicked off in fine style in the UAE, where Burj Khalifa marked the start of the new year with a spectacular fireworks display, with a similarly lavish event held at Abu Dhabi's Corniche.
In Ras Al Khaimah, an ornate fireworks display even netted the emirate two new world records.
Residents and tourists alike flocked to the country's hot spots for the occasion – and among them were a few famous faces.

Nancy Ajram
The Lebanese superstar took to the stage at Abu Dhabi's Al Maryah Island earlier in the evening, where she treated fans to a live rendition of some of her greatest hits.
Ajram, who has sold more than 30 million records in her decades-long career, also shared a self-portrait ahead of the show, which she captioned her "last selfie of 2019".
Tamara Ecclestone
The British heiress, daughter of Formula One legend Bernie Ecclestone, rang in the new year in Dubai with her husband, Jay Rutland, and daughter Sophia. According to an Instagram post shared in front of a distinctive festive display, the family appear to have spent the night at the Four Seasons Resort in Jumeirah.
Ferne McCann
The British reality star and former castmate of The Only Way Is Essex welcomed in 2020 from Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa in Dubai. "A genuine smile for many reasons. Seeing the new year in with my darling friends in Dubai," the model captioned a shot taken in the hotel's sprawling grounds.
Tamer Hosny
The Egyptian pop star followed Ajram on the bill at Al Maryah Island last night, from where he shared an on-stage selfie with his 15.3 million Instagram followers.
Nassif Zeytoun
The Syrian singer performed a concert as part of Dubai Opera's festivities to mark the start of 2020, treating fans to an al fresco gig at the foot of Burj Khalifa.
Nelly
The Hot in Herre rapper was in town to perform a New Year's gig at Drai's Dubai, where he thrilled fans with renditions of tracks such as Ride Wit Me. The star rang in midnight with his partner, Shantel Jackson.
Yo Yo Honey Singh
The Indian singer, producer and director marked the start of 2020 with a show at Dubai's Bollywood Parks.
Jonas Blue
The English DJ was in Dubai to perform at Zero Gravity, but he made some time for a spot of sun-bathing, sharing a balcony shot from his Palm Jumeirah hotel.
Mario Gotze
The German footballer, who plays for the national team as well as Borussia Dortmund, rang in the new year with a Burj Khalifa view.

This Dutch footballer, meanwhile, celebrated at Rixos JBR in Dubai.

The Miss Independent star was back in the UAE last night for a festive performance at White Dubai, where he welcomed in 2020 with wife Crystal Smith.
