Abu Dhabi's transport authority made a move to legalise scooter rentals in July, followed a month later by the launch of Berlin company Circ. The company's self-service rental scheme allows users to find an e-scooter using the Circ app, scan a QR code to unlock it and hop on.

Circ typically charges a Dh3 fee to unlock a scooter and Dh1 per minute after. However, the company has a promotion until Tuesday, December 31, which allows users to avail themselves of a free 15-minute ride upon using the voucher code “wecirc” when unlocking a scooter.

"Your first 15 minute-ride is free if you have successfully added the voucher code stated on the flyer attached to the scooter. The voucher code should be added before taking any ride to make it work," a Circ spokesperson tells The National. "You also need to register a debit or credit card yet as a requirement before you can redeem the free voucher code 'wecirc'. To add the voucher code, open the app, look for the 3 lines icon on the top left hand corner of the page and click on it. Select 'Promotions', and then enter the voucher code highlighted in orange."

The e-scooters are currently available across various locations in Abu Dhabi, including the Corniche, World Trade Centre, Khalidiyah Mall, and in Al Bateen across the coast. They go at a maximum speed of 20kph.

“I used to have a mountain bike which I would ride with a biking group, but in the summer it became very hot so I sold all of my three bikes and bought a scooter,” says Perryl Malapitan, who works at House of Special La Paz Batchoy restaurant on Airport Road, and is a member of Abu Dhabi’s budding E-kick scooter group. “It is quicker to get to work, and because of the heat it is more tolerable to ride a scooter.”
