The Mini name is no stranger to motorsport, starting off with success in the 1960 Monte Carlo Rally. Next month, the next chapter in the brand's racing history will unfold with the competitive debut of the Mini All4 in the Dakar Argentina-Chile Rally, starting in Buenos Aires on New Year's Day. The All4 cross-country rally car, designed by the Mini Design Team and engineered by Magna Steyr, will be driven by the French rally team of Guerlain Chicherit and co-driver Michel Périn. The car, spotted here being tested in France, features large air intakes, a carbon-kevlar body, a twin-turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 315hp and 710Nm of torque; it is 10cm shorter than the BMW X3 CC rally car that it will be replacing. It has been a rather swift design and engineering project, as BMW - owners of the Mini marque - only gave the project the green light in June; much of the work took place in the last two months.
