The Dubai-based Islamic Fashion and Design Council (IFDC) partnered with Torino Fashion Week (TFW), which comes to a close on July 3, to introduce a modest wear category on Italian runways for the first time.
If you happened to be watching IFDC’s live videos on Instagram, you will have noticed a group of women wearing head-to-toe pink outfits, sitting in the front row. Dressed in corporate-style pantsuits with flared trousers, knee-length, collared, button-down tunics and matching veils, all in the on-trend hue of millennial pink, the women certainly stood out.
The troupe of pink ladies were decked out in Al Nisa Designs, headed by LA-based African American Muslim Carmen Muhammad. In June, she launched an online campaign to raise funds for her TFW collection, which she put together in just 15 days.
Her utilitarian outfits are offered in hues of pink, turquoise, lavender, red, black and more. They can be worn together, as mono-toned, full-look ensembles, or as separates. While residents of the UAE may find that the pink versions bear striking resemblance to the uniforms worn by the drivers of the country's pink taxis, the jewel-toned options may appeal to hijab-wearing women in the workforce seeking ultra-modest power suits.
