Don't move things you won't need, prepare for your new space by ordering furniture ahead of time and more tips on a smooth transition.
Move house without the stress
Whether you're moving abroad or down the road, the longer you give yourself to prepare, the less stressful it will be. Start gathering quotes from removal companies. You might be tempted to enlist the help of some man and his van, but using a reputable moving company means you'll have some recourse if anything goes wrong. Give your current landlord the required notice and start collecting packing materials such as boxes, bags and newspapers. Work through your food stores; the more you use, the less you'll have to pack.
Get rid of books, clothes and other items that you don't really need. Why not donate to a local charity or hold a garage sale?
Order new furniture as soon as you can. If you are taking your furniture with you and any of it is prefabricated, start disassembling it. Let people know about your change of address.
Try to leave young children and pets with friends on moving day so they don't get in the way. And try to coerce friends into helping with the actual move.
The night before you move, pack a bag with essential items such as a change of clothes, toiletries, towels and takeaway menus. Also make sure your new landlord's number is saved in your phone in case there are any unforeseen problems.
